How to Find Researchers at Your Organisation (Without an Integration)

As premium consortium ORCID members, you have access to real-time member reporting through the ORCID Member Portal: https://member-portal.orcid.org/ (for access, contact the Main Administrative Contact for your organisation’s ORCID membership)

The Member Portal provides insights into how integrations are being used, the number of researchers that have connected their iDs to the integration, alongside the number of records which have been updated. The Affiliation Dashboard section of the Member Portal shows ORCID iDs for all of the researchers affiliated with your organisation and allows for download of ORCID iDs, names, and affiliation details as CSV to cross-reference with internal organisational systems.

To generate the email domain counts, ORCID searches for domains that match the website URL they have on file for your organisation (e.g. if your website URL is www.universitycollege.edu, ORCID searches for emails ending in @universitycollege). To generate the Affiliation Dashboard, ORCID searches the registry for affiliations with the persistent identifiers they have on file for your organisation (ROR, GRID, Ringgold). To update or add email domains or organisational PIDs, please contact the Irish ORCID Consortium Lead.

Please note: researchers have the option of setting the privacy settings of the data on their ORCID records as private (“only me”), available to trusted parties, or public (“everyone”). There are two levels of reporting within the Member Portal:

• lists of ORCID iDs, name, title, department, start and end dates (in the Affiliation Dashboard), which ORCID are only enabled to provide when researchers’ mark this data as public.
• anonymised stats, for which ORCID anonymises the registry data to provide member organisations stats regardless of privacy setting – these not include reference to identifying information, e.g. ORCID iDs or researchers’ names etc.

API Calls in the Browser

You can run an API call for affiliation following the instructions on this page: http://members.orcid.org/api/resources/find-myresearchers. This API call can be done in the web browser, it doesn’t need a stand-alone application and can be exported in CSV format. This will give you the researcher’s name and distinguish between current affiliation and past affiliation etc. This method only retrieves data that the researcher has marked public. (You can also search by email domain and name/DOI using this method).

If your query uses quotation marks, ensure the use of straight quotation marks (symbol character code 0022 in Microsoft Word) rather than curly quotation marks to retrieve accurate results.

Registry Advanced Search

You can also search the Registry Advanced Search interface on the ORCID website, but this will not distinguish between current and past affiliations and retrieves only public data. However, it might be useful to figure out if a specific researcher, known to you, has an ORCID iD: https://orcid.org/orcid-search/search.

If you are searching under Institution Name, place your search term within quotation marks and ensure the use of straight quotation marks (symbol character code 0022 in Microsoft Word) rather than curly quotation marks to retrieve accurate results.
