OA quota per year: 111 articles, to be used by participating members on a first-come-first-served basis. 2025 quota alert: as of Fri 5 Sep, this quote is now fully used. OA will not be offered to authors for the rest of 2025. IReL is negotiating with ACS for a new agreement from 2026.
OA mandates: please be aware that many funders (including Research Ireland) mandate that a version of the article be immediately available from the date of publication with a Creative Commons CC-BY license. If OA via the IReL agreement is not available to an author (such as when the limited OA quota runs out), ACS will levy author-facing fees to allow them to comply with funder mandates. This will be either a $4,500 article processing charge to make the published article OA, or an “article development charge” of ($2,500) to allow the author accepted manuscript be posted in a repository with a CC-BY license and without and embargo. Research Ireland grant funds may not be used for such fees in hybrid journals.
Journals eligible for OA publishing: almost all ACS journals. See our list of all OA eligible journals in IReL’s agreements.
Eligible authors: the corresponding author is a current staff member or student of a participating member institution at the time an article is accepted for publication. Invitations to make articles OA are subject to approval by member institutions.
Eligible article types: any peer-reviewed articles.
OA publishing license: CC-BY only.
