Introduction: this agreement gives current staff and students at participating institutions:
1. Access to current content from all of Wiley’s subscription journals.
2. The ability to make their articles accepted for publication in Wiley journals open access without the author paying an article processing charge (APC). Further details below.Â
OA quota per year: a limited annual publishing fund *projected* to cover all articles from members’ eligible authors:
- 2025: 582 Hybrid journal articles. 196 Gold journal articles.Â
- 2026: 594 Hybrid journal articles; 200 Gold journal articles.
- 2027: 606 Hybrid journal articles; 204 Gold journal articles.
- 2028: 618 Hybrid journal articles; 208 Gold journal articles.
IMPORTANT:
These limited quotas may not cover all articles from participating institutions. If the Hybrid or Gold quotas run out in any year, OA funded by this agreement will not be offered to articles accepted for the rest of that year. While IReL and Wiley actively monitor usage of the quotas to ensure that participating members and their authors can plan their publication route, neither guarantees that OA via the agreement will be offered on acceptance.Â
If the quota runs out, and the article is in a Hybrid journal: the publisher will offer authors the options of a) publishing the article subscription (closed access) with no fee, or b) publishing the article OA by means of the author paying the APC. Authors can continue to make their articles available using the Green open access model, subject to the journal’s policy. See Self-archiving with Wiley or the Open policy finder database of publishers’ Green OA policies.
If the quota runs out, and the article is in a Gold (fully OA) journal, the author must pay an APC. Before a corresponding author submits to a Gold journal, they must ensure that they have the means to pay the APC if required.
Journals included for OA publishing:
- all Wiley hybrid (partially open access) and Gold (fully open access) journals. See this list of all journals (including Wiley’s) included in IReL open access agreements: http://bit.ly/irelOAjournals.
- A small number of Wiley subscription-only journals are excluded.Â
Eligible authors:
- the corresponding author must be a current staff member or student of a participating institution at the time of editorial acceptance. Requests for OA are subject to approval by participating institutions.Â
Eligible article types: Case Study, Case Study Media, Commentary, Data Article, Education, Lecture, Method and Protocol, Perspective, Practice and Policy, Rapid Publication, Research Article, Review Article, Short Communication, Technical Note
OA publishing license: Eligible Authors will be able to select from the following Creative Commons licenses, as applicable for the particular journal: Attribution
International (CC BY), Attribution Non-Commercial International (CC BY-NC), Attribution No-Derivatives International (CC BY-ND), or Attribution Non-Commercial No-Derivatives International (CC BY-NC-ND).Â
