Open Access Monitor Tour for Repository Managers

Our latest community webinar, took place on Monday, 29 June, attracting an audience of over 25 ORI community members.

Leonidas Pispiringas (OpenAIRE) delivered a comprehensive overview of the Irish Open Access Monitor, outlining its role in providing transparent, up-to-date insights into Ireland’s research landscape and supporting the national goal of achieving 100% open access by 2030.

Key takeaways for repository managers included:

  • Repositories are central to data quality and visibility: High-quality metadata—especially clear access rights and licence information—directly improves open access rates and the accuracy of institutional dashboards.
  • Integration with OpenAIRE brings tangible benefits: Registering repositories via OpenAIRE enables inclusion in the OpenAIRE Graph, increasing discoverability across European and global research infrastructures, including EOSC.
  • Metadata enrichment enhances repository value: Services such as the OpenAIRE Broker can add missing identifiers, links to projects, and additional open access versions, strengthening records and interoperability.
  • Improved metadata can significantly improve OA reporting: Practical examples showed how refining repository metadata (e.g. licences) can substantially increase reported open access levels at institutional level.
  • Transition to richer monitoring is underway: The Monitor is evolving into a broader Research Monitor (launching November 2026), expanding beyond publications to include datasets and software.

The session provided valuable guidance on how repository managers can enhance data quality, maximise visibility, and better leverage the Open Access Monitor to support institutional and national open research goals.
